#cafeyvrinvictoria Hey Happy Coffee

Hey Happy Coffee opened last month in Downtown Victoria and brings a new experience for coffee lovers in the capital city. The cafe is a new venture by Rob Kettner who previously was a co-owner at Victoria's Fernwood Coffee Company along with being the 2010 Canadian Barista Champion.

Located inside the Market Square open air shopping mall the cafe is on the bottom floor of the old Grand Pacific Hotel that was built in 1879. The cafe is decidedly more modern in design with the space divided by the coffee bar on one side of the room while some unique seating and tables are built into the opposite wall. There's some additional seating by the front window along with some benches at the front and back entrances to the cafe.

Hey Happy Coffee is a multi-roaster cafe and they've assembled an impressive selection of roasters from across North America. Currently they have beans from Anchored Coffee, Heart Coffee Roasters, Phil & Sebastian Coffee Roasters and Ritual Coffee. Espresso drinks at Hey Happy get prepared on their La Marzocco Linea and coffee by the cup is prepared using Hario V60 ceramic drippers.

The cafe also serves a selection of teas from San Francisco's Song Tea & Ceramics (which is also providing teas for numerous cafes in the US especially around their home base in the Bay Area including G&B Coffee, Go Get ‘Em TigerHeart Coffee, Linea Caffe, Ritual Coffee and Saint Frank Coffee).

Hey Happy also experiments with some drinks in the cafe for customers looking for something different from filter coffee or an espresso-based drink. They use local honey for a Honey'd Latte served hot and on the cold side there are even more options. Starting with an Espresso Mint Julep, Coconut Milk Iced Latte and two bottle cold coffees (one plain and one cherry flavoured) that are brewed hot using Chemex pourover brewers, flash chilled and bottled.

And the cafe also brings in baked goods from some local favourites around Victoria with pastries from Fol Epi Bakery and doughnuts from Yonni's Doughnuts (which is made at Discovery Coffee's bakery and also sold at their three Victoria cafes).

Hey Happy Coffee will also be venturing into coffee education with home brewing workshops while also carrying a fully selection of home brewing equipment available for purchase in the cafe.

Eat Magazine: First Look: Hey Happy Coffee

“It’s exciting for me to show people another side of coffee. To be able to offer single-cup service and delicious and approachable drinks using fine coffee as the main ingredient, creating a bridge between coffee and the culinary world,” says Kettner.
