Inside Lukes General Store @ Space Lab (Closed)

Part museum, part antique store, part furniture showroom and part barbershop: Lukes General Store and their Stumptown coffee bar is one of the newest additions to the Space Lab at 126 East Pender Street in Chinatown.

Lukes Drug Mart which is based out of Calgary, Alberta started with a single pharmacy in 1951. Over the years the family business has transformed their store to include carrying unique product brands, selling vinyl records and opening a Stumptown coffee bar last year. As the first retailer in Alberta to sell Stumptown Coffee, they have already become the largest account for Stumptown in Canada.

They've brought their connection with Stumptown to Vancouver opening a coffee bar for an initial six month run as a popup location using their online store brand Lukes General Store.

The brewed coffee at Lukes General Store gets made using a Bodum Chambord French Press and then poured into a thermal carafe which until recently was the method Stumptown used in their own cafes. Stumptown has recently switched to using Fetco filter coffee at their cafes with French Press brewed coffee available on request.

The coffee menu at Lukes also includes espresso drinks prepared on the La Marzocco Strada or Chemex pour over coffee. The coffee bar will have kegs of Stumptown's cold brew on tap for this summer, but they have Stumptown stubbies in stock until then. Lukes General Store also sell bags of Stumptown Coffee at Lukes with their weekly shipment coming in every Thursday.

The coffee bar at Lukes was custom built by Barista Capsule which manufactures their modular coffee bars in California. Finished with a Carrara marble counter and white washed hickory on the sides. The bar includes a two-stage water filtration system, under counter mounted pitcher rinser along with an integrated electricity distribution panel. They are available in plumbed and tanked configurations.

Lukes is also using their pop-up space to sell a selection of products from their Calgary stores: Mast Brothers Chocolate, Malin + Goetz Apothecary, Baxter of California, Meow Meow Tweet, Juniper Ridge, Tivoli Audio, and Portland General Store.

Lukes General Store branding and identity was handled by Vancouver's Hank White Design Co. And the hand painted sign and gold gilding on the front window was done by Vancouver artist Edward McKeever of Strong River.
